Fiberglass pools
A pool made in a factory, trucked in and set in the ground, often in a fraction of the time a concrete pool takes.
A fiberglass pool is a one-piece shell molded in a factory, delivered by truck and lowered into a prepared hole by crane. The builder levels it on a gravel base, connects the plumbing, backfills around it while filling it with water, then adds coping and decking. For Huntsville-area families who want an inground pool quickly, with a smooth surface and lower upkeep, fiberglass is a strong option.
Is fiberglass a good fit?
- You'd like to be swimming sooner rather than later
- A standard shape and size works for you
- You want a smooth surface that's easy on feet
- You'd rather avoid future resurfacing costs
- A crane can reach your back yard
- The pool doesn't need to be very large or very deep
Limits to know about
Shells have to travel on a truck, so width and length are capped, and you choose from each manufacturer's molds rather than drawing your own shape. A crane needs a path or a reach over the house. Steep or tight lots can make delivery hard. Ask the builder for the shell's exact dimensions and how it will get into your yard.
Fiberglass in Huntsville clay and rock
A fiberglass shell depends on a level, well-drained bed and good backfill. In the deep red clays common around Huntsville, water can collect in the excavation after the region's frequent rain. NWS normals put Huntsville at about 54.3 inches of precipitation a year, with March the wettest month. Groundwater pressing on an empty or half-empty shell can push it out of level, so ask how the builder handles drainage under and around the pool. Where shallow limestone shows up, the hole may need rock removal to reach the right depth.
Upkeep
The gel-coat surface is non-porous, so algae has a harder time taking hold and chemical use tends to be lower than in plaster pools. Owners should still keep water balanced to protect the finish, and should never drain a fiberglass pool without the builder's guidance.

Common questions
How big can a fiberglass pool be?
Shell sizes are limited by what can be trucked on the highway, so very large or very wide pools are usually concrete. Ask builders for the exact dimensions of the models they offer.
Why should a fiberglass pool not be drained?
Groundwater can push up on an empty shell and shift or damage it. Draining should only be done with the builder or manufacturer guidance.
Is fiberglass cheaper than gunite?
Often, especially over the long term, but not always. National cost guides show overlapping ranges for the two types, so get quotes for both.
